Il settimo festival romano cresce rendendosi sempre più interessante. Eccetto per qualche esibizione a rischio di noia.

Nell'ultimo week-end Roma si è riempita dei più importanti fotoreporter italiani e di qualche ospite da fuori per il Festival Internazionale di Fotografia.
Giunto alla sua settima edizione, il FotoGrafia Festival è nato nel 2002 al primo mese da sindaco di Walter Veltroni. In questi anni la manifestazione, nata dal suo tutt’ora Direttore Artistico Marco Delogu, è cresciuta sia nelle dimensioni che nella differenziazione delle attività offerte. Il tutto è stato possibile grazie a grandi sponsor, persuasi a contribuire a mostre di difficile comprensione, ai 187.000 euro (cifra di costo del festival dichiarata da Delogu) e all’iniziativa di tutti quei professionisti del settore che hanno prestato il loro contributo, a volte gratuitamente.
Martin Parr durante le "Lezioni Romane" - photo: Daniele FedericoIl nuovo Palazzo delle Esposizioni è stato propulsivo in questo senso, ospitando le mostre principali, le conferenze, le "Lezioni Romane" che hanno visto tra gli ospiti di punta Martin Parr, le letture dei portfolio (un chiaro contributo allo studio e al crescita della fotografia italiana di qualità).

"Le scelte del Festival sono quanto di più lontano possa esserci dalle logiche di mercato – ha detto Marco Delogu nel corso di una Lezione Romana - lo dimostrano i fotografi e le mostre presentate. Prendiamo il premio Baume & Mercier: il lavoro di Lucia Nimcova è estremamente complesso, interiore, ed è chiaro che non può piacere a tutti, soprattutto a uno sguardo superficiale. In ciò ha rappresentato una delle grandi scommesse e il rischio, quindi, di perdere uno dei maggiori sponsor del Festival."

Il museo di via Nazionale ha l’altra qualità di trovarsi in posizione centralissima nella capitale, propone lavori che vivono di per sé, progetti fotografici nati da interessanti riflessioni o da una lunga analisi e studio dell’oggetto rappresentato.
Il tema di quest'anno è "vedere la normalità", da cui gli intenti condivisibilissimi per un’autoriflessione da parte della fotografia italiana finalizzata alla ricerca di una propria identità. La volontà è quella, espressa più volte nel corso dei vari incontri, di promuovere il dibattito parcellizzato nelle troppe realtà della fotografia. Il problema del festival è che nonostante gli intenti, non sempre riesce ad aggiungere qualcosa di nuovo con le opere presentate, è il caso della "Commissione su Roma" e dell'arte che si parla addosso.
La "Commissione su Roma" costituisce la prima parte e introduce alla produzione originale del festival. Per realizzarla è stato chiesto a 12 artisti fotografi italiani e internazionali di venire nella capitale per rappresentarla con i loro occhi in una collettiva di sguardi tutti diversi. L’esibizione principale è stata affidata a Gabriele Basilico il quale ha esplorato il corso del Tevere in tutto il suo percorso romano per trarne gli scatti.

“C’è un’aspetto che si riscopre sempre della fotografia. È come se essa leggesse degli indizi che poi si ricompongono come in una puntata di CSI. Quando si fotografa da tanti anni questa cosa la si sa e così mi succede che pianto il mio cavalletto in un punto, traccio un percorso, vago, ma so che questo meccanismo arriverà ed è molto eccitante. Aiuta a dare profondità e valore a un lavoro che molto spesso rischia una caduta d’interesse da parte di chi lo fa”

Il resto della collettiva è di: Raffaela Mariniello, David Farrell, Guy Tillim, Paolo Ventura, Pieter Hugo, Tim Davis, Claudia Jaguaribe, Milton Gendel, Shi Gourui e Miguel Rio Branco. La mostra di Leonie Purchas, è di quelle chiaramente volute da Delogu: la fotografa da alcuni anni si concentra con grande passione sul tema famiglia ricavandone sguardi profondamente intimistici, opere che ricavano la loro forza raramente dalla bellezza delle immagini prese singolarmente (esclusion fatta per la poetica copertina del festival), piuttosto da un coacervo di sensazioni e stati d'animo fatti di pause, giochi di bambini, drammi e talvolta squallore dalla vita famigliare. Leonie Purchas trascorre, del tempo, perfino interi mesi in casa di queste persone, si occupa delle faccende di casa, le aiuta stringendoci un legame e nel frattempo scatta immagini. La sua mostra appartiene a quel lato del Festival criticabile, lontano dal grande pubblico, che cade a volte nella inconsistenza di concetti autobiografici, da vedere in religioso silenzio e in un determinato stato d’animo. Per questi motivi può risultare noiosa e incomprensibile. Il suo lavoro si chiama In the Shadow of Things (già il titolo ci trasmette la pesantezza di un oggetto difficile da scassinare) e si concentra sulla vita della madre.

Poi c'è Il Far West Cinese, in cui il giovane Paolo Woods è riuscito a rappresentare un'Africa inedita e terribilmente attuale: da tempo si sente nell'aria (aria delle agenzie giornalistiche intendiamoci) l'esigenza condivisa di abbandonare i cliché legati al continente nero povero, affamato e malato, certo l'Africa è tutto questo ma anche molto di più. Già quando ancora nessun giornale parlava dell'argomento, Paolo si recò in Nigeria, dove aveva allacciato già particolari contatti e intraprese un reportage sulla presenza cinese in Africa: Pechino nella sua sete di materie prime si è lanciata alla conquista, di rocce e metalli, degli spazi e della manodopera a basso costo. Fino a qualche anno la comunità con maggiore presenza nel continente era quella francese con circa 100.000 presenze, in pochi anni 500.000 cinesi si sono riversati nel continente africano dai ricchi manager e imprenditori fino a quegli asiatici, che schiacciati da uno stipendio affamante, hanno rischiato un così lungo viaggio in vista di guadagni ben maggiori.
