Continuiamo l'excursus nella discografia dei Fab Four, con un disco da non farsi mancare assolutamente. Un album che ha ispirato artisti di ogni genere in ciascuna parte del mondo

The Beatles

RUBBER SOUL (’65) – L’album che segna il grande salto di qualità dei Beatles e che con il successivo Revolver trasforma per sempre la musica del gruppo. È il loro disco più fresco, diretto e soprattutto con un altissimo livello qualitativo: in Rubber Soul non esistono momenti di stanca, ci sono solo canzoni belle o “più belle” e la qualità sonora è impressionante per l’epoca. Si tratta infatti di uno dei primi dischi (forse il primo) mai registrato con un mix a quattro piste, cioè con la possibilità di sovra-incidere in modo efficace sovrapponendo diverse session (e quindi diversi strumenti). I Beatles non si fanno però assolutamente sopraffare dalle possibilità del mezzo e lo sfruttano anzi con parsimonia, affinando la qualità musicale del disco, ma senza strafare, fermandosi a quello che serve (come il sitar in Norvegian Wood o il piano barocco in In My Life).
Si tratta sempre dello stesso gruppo dei primi anni ‘60, che ama i coretti, il canto in falsetto e lo yeah yeah, ma l’equilibrio raggiunto in questo lavoro è davvero incredibile. I “lenti” in particolare lasciano il segno, e non tanto per la famigerata Michelle di McCartney, quanto per lo strepitoso tris d’assi di Lennon (In My Life, Norvegian Wood e Girl) che nei Beatles non riuscirà più a raggiungere un livello altrettanto alto con i pezzi “sentimentali”.

La canzone da non perdere in questo caso è difficile da decidere, ma opterei per la già più volte citata Norvegian Wood: un testo efficace che racconta fedelmente un episodio realmente accaduto (il tradimento – la moglie all’epoca era Cintya Powell, Yoko era ancora lontana - consumato da Lennon con una ragazza appena conosciuta, inclusa la nottata passata dormendo nella vasca da bagno… tutto vero) in un’atmosfera dolce ma efficacissima, e il primo uso del sitar (uno strumento proveniente dall’India che di lì a poco sarà abusatissimo nel rock), qui sfruttato senza forzature, solo per aggiungere all’atmosfera generale del brano un tocco esotico e alternativo in linea con il racconto di quella nottata appunto “insolita”.
