James Cameron regala al mondo uno dei più grandi capolavori dell’arte cinematografica, un’opera sublime, complessa, universale e sovversiva. Cinema che si fa Storia, genio che si fa immagine

Ci sono stati dei punti essenziali nella storia dell’arte cinematografica, momenti che più o meno conoscono tutti. La nascita del sonoro, l’avvento del colore, l’invenzione del formato panoramico, la rivoluzione digitale e adesso il cinema in tre dimensioni, nuova frontiera da esplorare alla scoperta di ulteriori forme espressive. Come spettatori e, nel mio caso, come critico, possiamo ritenerci davvero fortunati d’aver potuto assistere all’ultimo di questi momenti epocali, potendogli dare anche un nome che ce lo faccia identificare facilmente e una data in cui collocarlo storicamente. Il cinema che abbiamo conosciuto fino a questo momento ovviamente non è morto dopo l’uscita di Avatar, sarebbe follia considerare primitive le commedie di Billy Wilder o la fantascienza anni Cinquanta, così come insensato pensare che da oggi in più non si dovrebbero più produrre kammerspiele intimisti o non ricordare le lezioni stilistiche e teoriche di Bergman o di Rossellini. Semplicemente James Cameron ci ha fatto fare un passo nel futuro, non piccolo come lo sviluppo del software che creò il T-1000 in Terminator 2, ma enorme perché capace di unire le moderne tecnologie di produzione e fruizione del cinema con una forma narrativa classica straordinaria.
Avatar è un’opera complessa, con numerose chiavi di lettura e una quantità impressionante di riferimenti, sottotesti, metafore e, soprattutto, questioni di importanza universale che Cameron riesce a portare sullo schermo grazie a una lucidissima e organizzata visione globale dell’arte e della tecnologia. Utilizzando il 3D in maniera strettamente narrativa, il regista di Titanic immerge lo spettatore nel film, facendolo diventare parte integrante dell’avventura del marine paraplegico Jake Sully sul favoloso e pericoloso pianeta Pandora, dove potrà di nuovo correre felice nei boschi grazie al suo avatar, clone nato dall’unione del DNA dei Navii, abitanti di Pandora, con quello umano. Terra di frontiera, Pandora, immediatamente presa d’assalto da una multinazionale pronta a distruggere quel luogo unico nell’universo per spogliarla delle ricchezze del sottosuolo, con la scusa di portare civiltà, integrazione e libertà.
La Storia che si ripete, dai tempi di John Smith a quelli di George W., una storia che abbiamo già visto quella di Avatar, semplicemente perché non c’è niente di più classico nella cultura americana, e ridurre l’incontro tra Jake e Neytiri alla storia di Pocahontas sarebbe ingenuo quanto miope. Il vero Avatar è il film stesso, mirabile e cinefila sintesi della vita, capace di raccontare un grande romanzo d’amore e morte attraverso gli stilemi del New American Cinema e memore della lezione immortale di John Ford. Cameron ringrazia i suoi Maestri offrendoci una visione paradossalmente realistica del futuro dell’umanità e del cinema, ribadendo che la sua arte è tutt’altro che ipertrofica, ma al contrario ancora costretta da mezzi tecnici non adatti a supportare un momento in cui la passività della platea è ormai anacronistica e per questo, nella sua magnificenza, anche la nuova tridimensionalità resta stretta al Re del Mondo e al compendio delle sue incredibili avventure che più che mai si dimostrano essere un corpo unico, fatto di uomini-macchina, simboli che collassano, paure ataviche e molto di più.
Avatar racconta la strategia del terrore post World Trade Center, la disperazione dell’America di fronte a un’economia al tracollo, la paura del diverso e dell’ignoto, la lenta autodistruzione a cui stiamo andando incontro trascurando il pianeta che ci ospita e che prima o poi ci chiederà il conto. Avatar è un film universale, opera totale che funziona con precisione biologica, arte che riscalda con i suoi colori e le sue emozioni e i suoi sentimenti, tutti meravigliosamente umani.
Amore, paura, coraggio, onore, amicizia, viltà, curiosità, inedia, ferocia, non manca niente in Avatar, tantomeno la speranza e, soprattutto, una visione del futuro del cinema chiarissima e ancora in embrione, perché tra le tante cose che ci insegna questo meraviglioso albero della vita che ci ha regalato Cameron, forse la più importante è che raggiunto il massimo obiettivo, bisogna rimboccarsi le maniche e inventare il prossimo.
Così facendo, prima o poi anche i nostri pronipoti correranno con la gambe di un Avatar.
