Non è facile immaginarsi un romanzo ambientato nel mondo del cinema che non sia opera di un letterato americano, eppure l'affascinante e complesso universo che si cela dietro la realizzazione di un film non è stato solo appannaggio di quanti, in un modo o nell'altro, abbiano orbitato intorno alla non sempre riconoscente industria hollywoodiana. A riprova di ciò la Adelphi rende di nuovo disponibile La violetta del Prater, uno dei titoli più osannati di Christopher Isherwood, ma da troppo tempo scomparso dagli scaffali delle librerie pur essendo un gioiello di stile, nonché esempio di squisito e intelligente esercizio metalinguistico.
Non a caso la storia del romanzo ha come protagonista uno scrittore di successo, omonimo di Isherwood, che viene ingaggiato dai responsabili di uno studio cinematografico inglese per realizzare i dialoghi di una sceneggiatura da affidare alla regia di Friedrich Bergmann, un importante regista viennese, esule per scelta dal suo paese in quanto fortemente critico verso la politica messa in atto da Hitler. E mentre si cercano le soluzioni tecniche per meglio inscenare la commedia che dà il titolo al romanzo, si va definendo il rapporto e la complicità tra Isherwood e Bergmann, quest'ultimo nelle vesti di un Virgilio che guida il giovane scrittore alla comprensione delle idiosincrasie umane, della guerra e i suoi orrori, ma anche dell'attrazione tra i sessi, delle relazioni familiari, della vita tutta insomma, espressa attraverso i punti di vista di che ne fa affabulazione e rappresentazione.Questo di Isherwood è un libro la cui essenza è come l'aroma che si sprigiona dai fumi di un dolce tabacco, gradevole quanto si vuole ma pur sempre nocivo: “l'insostenibile leggerezza” del ritmo che sottende l'impianto drammaturgico conferendo un'impressionante scorrevolezza al romanzo, va di pari passo con un'acuta e implacabile attitudine riflessiva. Quest'ultima davvero corrosiva e spiazzante, specie perché narrata da chi come Isherwood ebbe la sventura di osservare in prima persona i tragici eventi che fanno da contesto alla narrazione. Oltre alla componente autobiografica è altrettanto evidente che la carriera e figura di Bergmann rievoca quella di tanti maestri del cinema europeo, che in seguito all'ascesa del Terzo Reich furono costretti a fuggire per evitare repressioni. Nel leggere questo romanzo sono tante le riminiscenze filmiche che si avvertono: l'umore frizzante e sensuale di Ernst Lubitsch, il brio magniloquente e decadente di Max Ophüls e l'umore malsano e provocatorio di quel folle genio di Erich von Stroheim. L'Isherwood's touch consiste nel tono apparentemente sommesso e frivolo col quale, invece, catalizza lo spirito di un'epoca e scruta gli aspetti più intimi della psicologia dei suoi personaggi. La sua scrittura opera esattamente come le “carrellate all'indietro” tanto care alle vague del cinema moderno, che mentre disvelano l'artifio del set allargano lo sguardo tanto da includere nel nuovo scenario le sfaccettature di un'epoca, la Storia e finanche il mondo intero.
