Kevin Smith, dopo aver regalato alla nona arte il personaggio di Green Hornet, aveva steso uno script per un nuovo film ispirato a L'uomo da sei milioni di dollari, la storica serie culto degli anni Settanta che vedeva protagonista Lee Majors, ma poi il progetto è naufragato prematuramente. Smith allora ha deciso di farne un fumetto, dal titolo The Bionic Man, scritto a quattro mani con Phil Hester per le matite e i colori di Jonathan Lau. Dal first look della copertina del primo numero, si può facilmente notare che il protagonista è alquanto diverso da quello interpretato da Majors...

In Italia fu mandato in onda a fasi alterne da Italia1 e Rete4, più o meno senza sosta. Da L'uomo da sei milioni di dollari fu tratto uno spin-off, di gran lunga più fortunato, La donna bionica - che oggi vede infatti la serie-remake. Furono anche realizzati ben sei film, tre durante la serie regolare e tre dopo la sua chiusura, che da noi andarono in onda divisi in due parti come fossero stati normali episodi.
